Rudder repair -- From the email list, Text/Pics by Keith F.
Bad Rudder on Boat My rudder was in such bad shape that it was about to fall off of the stock.
I was in a bind for time so I simply chopped my rudder apart, removed the stock, and sent it to Port Gardner to have a new rudder built around it ($150 less than a complete new rudder).
As best I remember, the stock goes only about 18 inches into the rudder. The stock is flattened and bent to about a 30 degree angle about 8 inches from the bottom of the stock.
The construction process was to position the stock into one side o f the shell and glass it to the shell down below that 30 degree bend area. Then the halves were mated. Then it was filled with foam. Then the top was glassed on.Picture by Stephen H.
Then the entire rudder was sprayed with gelcoat. There is no steel in the bottom half of the rudder.
